What Is a Vaulted Skylight?

A vaulted skylight is a type of roof lantern that is installed on a pitched roof. The light from the vaulted rooflight is diffused through a translucent or frosted panel, which spreads the light evenly throughout the room. Vaulted skylights are a great way to add natural light to a space, and they can also be used to create a more open feel in your home.

Vaulted Skylights FAQs

Vaulted skylights are skylights installed in rooms with sloped or cathedral ceilings. Vaulted skylights are a common feature of loft conversions where the space is directly under a sloped roof. Wherever they are installed, vaulted skylights flood a space with beneficial natural light and add an air of sophistication to a house.

Vaulted skylights can reduce energy bills by reducing or eliminating the need to run artificial lights during the daytime. Vaulted skylights that open will greatly enhance the ventilation in a home, making it both more comfortable and drier. And vaulted skylights can increase a home's market value by giving its kerb appeal a significant bump.

For the average homeowner, yes. That's because the installation of a skylight requires cutting a hole in the roof. Those with little or no experience working on roofs should never attempt to install a skylight themselves. Doing so is almost certain to result in damage to the roof structure and leaky skylights. Always have your skylights professionally installed by a contractor with skylight installation experience.

Where you have them installed is up to you, but be mindful that installing them at different angles to the sun will result in different types of light entering the space. If they are installed facing north, the light will be mostly diffuse. On the other hand, if they are installed facing south, the light will be more direct and intense.

An experienced contractor should be able to install a vaulted skylight in a single day. Obviously, if you want several vaulted skylights installed, it will take longer. Perhaps 2 or 3 days, including the interior finish work.

At this time, we do not offer a skylight installation service. We do, however, provide detailed installation instructions with every skylight that you can pass on to your installation contractor. If you like, we can help you locate an experienced contractor who can perform the installation for you.

If your vaulted skylights are professionally installed and properly maintained (periodic cleaning, annual inspection) high-quality vaulted skylights should last at least 20 years. In some cases, 30 years or more.
