Opening Roof Lanterns FAQs

Opening roof lanterns have one or more panes that open to admit fresh air and improve ventilation. In some cases, the entire roof lantern pivots open from the base.

Opening roof lanterns are designed for flat or nearly flat roofs with a pitch below 15°. For steeply pitched roofs, we stock a wide range of opening rooflights and skylights that are a better fit.

A single opening roof lantern can typically be installed in an afternoon, assuming no structural modifications are needed. Multiple units may take a day and a half to two days to complete.

We strongly advise against it. Our experience shows that most installation problems occur when homeowners attempt the work themselves. We recommend hiring a professional contractor and can recommend a reliable one if needed.

Not quite. Roof lanterns are larger, rise above the roofline in a pyramidal or spine-ridge shape, and are installed on flat roofs. Rooflights typically sit flat against the roof and can be installed on pitched roofs too.

We don't currently offer an installation service. However, every opening roof lantern comes with thorough step-by-step installation instructions to pass on to your contractor.

It works by way of a pole whose end is designed to lock into the opening mechanism, in case that mechanism is out of reach. Or it works by way of an electric motor or motors that can be operated from below using a remote. The motors may be battery-powered or, in some cases, solar powered.

Most homeowners have them installed over kitchens, living areas, home extensions and orangeries where both an enhanced level of daylight and ventilation are desirable.

The biggest benefit unique to opening roof lanterns is their ability to improve ventilation and air circulation in the space below. Along with this comes reduced condensation and a more comfortable environment in rooms that tend to generate moisture, like the kitchen.

Not if you buy high-quality ones from Rooflights & Roof Lanterns and have them installed by a qualified professional with experience installing skylights, rooflights and roof lanterns.

We strongly urge our customers to resist the temptation to perform a DIY installation. First, installing the roof lantern yourself will void any warranty. Second, untrained people get hurt all the time trying to install big, heavy opening roof lanterns. And third, in almost all instances when a homeowner complains about leaks, the leaks can be traced directly back to a DIY installation.

Opening roof lanterns are designed for flat roofs, although in some circumstances they can be made to work on (very) low-pitch roofs.

Because they reduce dependence on artificial lighting, opening roof lanterns should reduce your monthly energy bills. In addition, the ventilation they produce should enable you to use your air conditioner less frequently, saving even more energy and money.

It's possible. We recommend you contact your local authority to be sure before commencing work.
