It works by way of a pole whose end is designed to lock into the opening mechanism, in case that mechanism is out of reach. Or it works by way of an electric motor or motors that can be operated from below using a remote. The motors may be battery-powered or, in some cases, solar powered.

Second, untrained people get hurt all the time trying to install big, heavy opening roof lanterns. And third, in almost all instances when a homeowner complains about leaks, the leaks can be traced directly back to a DIY installation.
