Easy & Hassle-free Fitting

The rooflights we supply can be easily installed by a roofer or builder. We supply this complete and easy-to-follow step-by-step guide, including technical support documentation, in order to facilitate the installation.

Each rooflight that we supply can be conveniently installed on an insulated upstand coupled with an anodized aluminum angle trim, which your roofer/builder can provide.

Any installation-related diagrams and information you see on this page is for general guidance purposes only as each project can vary in terms of design and construction according to the architect’s drawings. Furthermore, upstand dimensions and design may also vary based on the architect’s drawings and insulation specifications. However, your rooflight may be custom-designed at an additional cost to suit wider upstands featuring larger than 100mm overhangs, should you require.

General Installation and Measurement Guidelines

RLRL flat rooflights are very easy to install by a competent roofer or builder. Below, you’ll find a simple fitting guide explaining each step. In order to get technical support, you can contact us via email or give us a call.

How to measure the opening

Before you can buy your rooflight, the first step is to take measurements of the structural opening where you want the rooflight to go. It is recommended that at least 5mm tolerances should be allowed all around the structural opening in order to let the rooflight’s bottom pane fit effortlessly into the opening.

For instance, if you purchased 1000mm x 1000mm rooflight from our drop down menu this will be the size of the top pane of glass that rests on top of the upstand. The bottom pane of glass will be 100mm smaller all around which would make the bottom pane 800mm x 800mm. You would make the structural opening 810mm x 810, upstand width up to 65mm wide and height 150mm high in this example.

For all standard rooflight units, the top pane has a black 100mm boarder and a 100mm overhang all around. The top pane can be made bigger for bigger upstand width if required at an additional cost.

For clarity as another example, if you purchase a 1000mm by 2000mm from our drop-down menu on our website. For this size skylight the bottom pane that slots into the structural opening will be 100mm smaller all around making it 800mm x 1800mm which means your structural opening should be 810mm x 1810mm. Upstand width should be up to 65mm wide and 150mm high, allowing a 35mm lip on each side of the top pane as per diagram below.

The diagram below should give you further insights:

How to prepare your roof

The skylight IGU is secured onto a timber kerb which will be prepared by your roofer or builder as part of the flat roof construction process.

It’s important for the timber upstand to protrude at least 150mm above the roof. Ensure that the pitch is at least 5°, which is deemed sufficient to allow water to flow down easily and prevent water pooling on top of the glass. At times customers may choose to install at lower than the recommended pitch. If installed on a lower pitch, we recommend pouring water over the top to ensure you’re ok with how the water is flowing off before the rooflight is installed. The purpose of the rooflight pitch is to allow the water/dirt to flow off and ensure maximum benefit of self-clean coating this option is selected. If installed completely flat water could pool on the top of the rooflight glass which won’t affect the performance or cause leaking, but you could be left with visible water when looking up at the skylight. If a glass Rooflight is installed below this recommended pitch then the Warranty would still be valid and this won’t affect the performance, however, you may experience ponding of water.

How to install your rooflight

The last step required to finish the roof before you can install your roof light is to apply a roof covering to the upstand’s side, which makes it weatherproof (illustration below).

Just to quickly reiterate, it’s important to get the timber upstand protrude by at least 150mm above the roof – the pitch should be 5°, allowing rainwater to flow down with ease. Before sealing the product with silicone, water can be applied to test the flow off of water, if pooling occurs a higher pitch may be required. If the self-clean option is selected, please note it works more effectively at pitches of 10 degrees and above.

Apply a reasonable amount of low modulus silicone to the Upstand’s top part according to the silicone supplier’s data sheet, after which you can place the top pane rooflight onto the top of the upstand . Apply pressure all around the 100mm overhang so that the silicone spreads evenly and seals any gaps. Finish the silicone with a silicone finishing tool.

Next, the bottom pane needs to be supported on all four sides after it is set in place with the aluminum angle fitted and bonded prior to the plasterboard. Secure the aluminum angle to the timber structure. Apply compatible structural silicone between the bottom aluminum angle trim’s surfaces and the bottom pane of glass according to the supplier’s data sheet, and firmly secure into place. Wipe away any excess silicone using a finishing tool. The aluminum angle can then covered with plasterboard.

The bottom and top panes of glass at this stage are fully supported. Only sealants compatible with the top of the upstand, glass, aluminum angle trim and setting blocks should be used. Sealants used should be compatible with Dowsil 3363. Dowsil 791 low modulus weather proofing silicone and Dowsil 895 Structural sealant are compatible with Dowsil 3363. Some sealant suppliers may require primer to be applied to surfaces.

Building Regs and Performance Specifications

The skylight system we supply are well-suited to a number of properties – from single-storey flat room extensions to fully built residential areas. Since each project demands its own unique requirements, we recommend that you take the trouble of running a check on building regulation requirements for your chosen rooflight with the designated builder, architect or building officer. It’s important that you take this crucial step before placing your order so that you are 100% compliant.

It is the installer’s responsibility to run a risk assessment. For instance, he/she should determine whether your rooflights should be double/triple glazed, obscure or laminated.

Standard Unit Specs

All our standard units are factory double glazed featuring a clear toughened glass top pane that’s manufactured to the BS EN 1279 and BS EN 12150 standards. In addition, an 18mm argon-filled cavity is structurally integrated with Toughened Low-E glass, helping to achieve a centre pane U-value of 1.1.

Triple glazed Units

For even higher performance U-value ratings, we offer triple glazed options, although a minimum U-value of 1.6 is required to stay in line with building regulations. This would achieve a 0.9 centre pane u-value.

Warranty:

This product is supplied with a 5 year manufacturers warranty.

What size do I order?

We work on the top pane of glass as this is most important for installation and to maintain the overhang to allow the water to drain away. The top pane of glass is the size on the drop-down menu and the bottom pane of glass is in total 200mm smaller which is the internal view of glass when in the property looking upwards. The bottom pane of glass slots into the structural opening. The structural opening is recommended to be a total of 10mm bigger than the bottom pane of glass. An example is if you order a 1000mm-by-1000mm Frameless Flat Glass Rooflight from the drop-down menu then this is the size of the top pane of glass. The bottom pane of glass will be 800mm by 800mm and the structural opening should be 810mm by 810mm.

What does the tinted glass do on the fixed Frameless flat rooflight?

The fixed frameless flat glass rooflight can have special glazing and fast lead time for even bespoke sizes. (Please see delivery tab) The tints can provide a reduction in heat build-up within the property and anti glare. Some tints on the glass are used for privacy such as opaque.

What you receive when tinted glass is added as main benefits to our frameless flat glazed rooflight:
- Energy Efficiency
- Sun protection
- Increased Privacy

How much glass am I going to see once the frameless flat glass rooflight is installed?

The top pane of glass is most important for installation to maintain the overhang and the bottom pane of glass is the visible internal pane you see when in the property looking up. An example is if you order a 1000mm-by-1000mm Frameless Flat Glass Rooflight from the drop-down menu then this is the size of the top pane of the glass rooflight. The bottom pane of glass will be 800mm by 800mm and the structural opening is recommended at 810mm by 810mm so once finished with the installation then the visible glass would be 800mm by 800mm. This can be dependent on the project and aesthetic finish and would be down to the builder to take into accordance any other build aspects.

What if my upstand is greater than 65mm in width? Does this mean this won’t

What if my upstand is greater than 65mm in width? Does this mean this won’t fit? For the sizes purchased on the drop-down menu the maximum recommended width for the fixed frameless skylight upstand is 65mm. If there is already an upstand in place that is greater than 65mm or the upstand needs to be wider than 65mm then this would mean your size would require a custom bespoke black border all the way around which is the measurement difference between the bottom and top pane of glass. This will be larger than the standard 100mm all the way around. If this is required please contact us for a quote.

Do I require double or triple glazed?

This information should be on the project plans or architect drawings. This can also be checked with your building control officer as projects can have their own specific requirements. Customers in most cases go with double glazed as customer feedback has been due to double glazed windows in the property, they do not feel they gain much benefit from a triple glazed contemporary rooflights. Most customers with a double-glazed skylights found the weight, delivery and manoeuvring of this onto the roof much easier.

Can flat skylights be used in commercial settings?

Commercial flat skylights are an increasingly popular option for businesses looking to add natural light to their space.

Unlike traditional skylights, which are pitched at an angle, commercial flat skylights are installed flush with the roof. This allows them to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the building, and they can also be installed in a variety of locations. In addition to being more aesthetically pleasing, commercial flat skylights are also easier to maintain and less likely to leak. As a result, they are an ideal choice for businesses that want the benefits of a skylight without the hassle.

Do I need to maintain my flat skylight?

Flat skylights are a great way to let natural light into your home, but they require some maintenance to keep them looking their best. Here are a few tips for keeping your skylight in top condition.

One of the most important things to do is to keep the glass clean. Dust and dirt can build up over time, making it difficult to see through the skylight. You can clean the glass with a mild soap and water solution, or you can use a commercial glass cleaner. Just be sure not to use anything abrasive that could scratch the surface.

In addition, you should check the seals around the skylight from time to time to make sure they are still intact. If you notice any cracks or gaps, you will need to apply new caulking or sealant. This will help to keep moisture and pests out of your home.
Finally, if you have a flat skylight, you will need to take special care to prevent leaks. Make sure that the flashing around the skylight is in good condition, and check the gutters and downspouts around your home to ensure that they are clear of debris. If you take these simple steps, you can enjoy years of trouble free use from your skylight.

What are the benefits of tinted glass?

Tinted glass is a type of glass that has been treated with a translucent film. This film helps to reduce the amount of light that can pass through the glass, making it an ideal choice for flat skylights.

Tinted glass can improve solar control performance by blocking out some of the sun's rays. This can help to keep a space cooler in the summer months and can also help to reduce glare.
