A curb-mounted skylight is one that's installed atop a raised frame, referred to in the industry as a "curb". The curb is an elevated square or rectangle that is attached to the roof deck. The skylight is then attached to the curb, elevating it and removing it from potentially harmful phenomena such as runoff.

There is nothing fancy about the curb. It is a simple frame - typically made of wood or metal - that the skylight sits on top of. It is flashed and sealed to prevent leaking before the skylight is installed, forming a sturdy base.

Deck-mounted skylights sit flush against the roof, while curb-mounted skylights sit atop a raised frame. Curb-mounted skylights are more common on flat, or nearly flat, roofs, because those roofs don't shed water as efficiently as sloped roofs. The curb keeps accumulated water and debris away from the skylight.
