How do bi-folding doors work?

Bi-folding doors, often referred to as ‘fold and slide’ doors, consist of multiple door leaves (typically between 2 and 7) that fold in on themselves to create a wide opening. These doors can slide in one direction or both ways from the centre, folding back onto each other. They are equipped with magnets that keep the doors aligned and operate on a track, allowing you to easily fold back the lead door and then tuck the remaining doors to one side.Bi-folding doors have gained immense popularity due to their ability to create expansive openings to the outdoors. This feature is ideal for enhancing your living space during the summer months, while also providing a stylish and secure option.

Can I have a main door without needing to fold all the doors back?

What we refer to as a “traffic door” is designed to function independently from the other doors in your configuration. This unique feature allows you to use it as a convenient everyday entry point without the need to slide open the adjacent doors, which can often be heavy. Essentially, the traffic door serves as the primary access point in your design, complete with an external handle positioned on the outside for easy accessibility. To illustrate, if you envision your doors sliding to the right when viewed from outside, the traffic door would be positioned on the far-left side of the arrangement. It’s important to keep in mind that for designs consisting of three, five, or seven panes, the lead door automatically functions as the traffic door. This is due to the inherent design of bi-fold doors, which are structured to stack in pairs. On the other hand, if you opt for a configuration with two, four, or six panes, it is essential that the door be hinged on the wall side. This hinge placement is crucial for the door to effectively serve as the traffic door, allowing for seamless operation.
