How to Maintain and Clean Your Rooflights

Our high-quality rooflights do not require much in the way of maintenance. But that's not to say they're entirely maintenance-free. In order to ensure you always benefit from optimal light penetration and that your rooflights enjoy a long, effective life you'll need to clean them from time to time. But just how does a homeowner do that? In this guide, we'll look at how to maintain and clean your rooflights.

The Basics of How to Maintain and Clean Your Rooflights

We would strongly advise that you hire professionals to clean your rooflights, as they'll have a lot of experience working at height and will have the proper equipment.

That said, if you are intent on cleaning the rooflights yourself, here is how to do it.

Step 1: Bring together your cleaning tools

When it comes to cleaning rooflights you will typically need the following:

  • A high-quality ladder or scaffolding capable of easily reaching the roof
  • A soft brush to remove debris on and around each rooflight
  • A bucket of water mixed with a mild detergent
  • A clean sponge to clean the window
  • A squeegee to wipe the window
  • A microfibre cloth for removing any leftover water and preventing streaks
  • Nerves of steel
  • Again, not everyone is cut out to work at height. If the idea gives you any hesitation, call a professional.

Step 2: Remove any loose material around the rooflight

Using a brush or broom with soft bristles so as not to scratch the glass gently sweep away and loose dirt, twigs, leaves or other materials that have accumulated on or around the rooflights.

Step 3: Start the wash process

Dip your sponge into the bucket of soapy water and thoroughly wash the entire surface of the window. If the rooflight window is big, work in sections to prevent the soap from drying before you squeegee it off. Remember not to press too hard on the window to avoid cracking or breaking it.

Step 4: Wipe the soapy water away

Using the squeegee quickly remove the soapy water from the window.

Step 5: Remove any excess

After you've thoroughly squeegeed the window down, use the microfibre cloth to remove any excess water or streaks.
