How to Clean Rooflights Without Damaging Them

Like every other part of your home that is outward facing toward the wider world, rooflights can accumulate dirt, dust and all types of airborne pollutants. As such your rooflights will need to be cleaned from time to time to ensure they look good and allow you to optimise the amount of natural light inside your house. In the guide below the team at Rooflights Roof Lanterns explain how to clean rooflights without damaging them.

Safely Clean Your Rooflights By Incorporating These Tips

We should state up front that we always recommend our customers have their rooflights professionally cleaned. This is mostly for safety's sake as professionals will have plenty of experience working at height on and around roofs, while the average homeowner will not. That said, if you are determined to clean the rooflights yourself here's how it's done.

Don't clean your rooflights on a sunny day

Why? Because direct sunlight will dry out the rooflights quickly, making them harder to clean. In addition, you're likely to be very uncomfortable working in direct sunlight. Always clean your rooflights on a cloudy day.

Make sure you have the right cleaning supplies

To clean your rooflights properly you'll need:

·    A bucket for water
·    A gentle window cleaner
·    A sponge
·    A squeegee
·    A dry brush
·    2 clean cloths (1 for drying, 1 for wiping the frames)
·    A sound ladder
·    A safety harness (if necessary)

Keep safety up front

Whether you're on a ladder, scaffolding or standing on the roof, always make sure you're using proper safety equipment. Never step or lean on the glass and don't continue if you feel uncomfortable.

Cleaning the Rooflight Windows

Stick to the following steps to get your rooflight windows as clean as possible:

·    Remove loose dirt and debris first using your dry brush
·    Dip the sponge into your bucket of soapy water
·    Wash the window gently using your sponge without pressing too hard
·    Use your squeegee to remove water and dirty residue
·    Remove dirt and dust from the frame using a damp cloth
·    Carefully move on to the next rooflight and repeat
