Energy-Saving Technologies in Modern Rooflights

Energy-saving technology is working its way into virtually everything to do with homes and businesses and modern rooflights are no exception. These technologies enable today's rooflights to reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency and increase natural lighting. The end result is lower energy bills. In the brief guide below we're going to take a closer look at energy-saving technologies in modern rooflights.
Triple-glazed window panes
These days triple-glazed windows are becoming more and more common in rooflights because of the superior insulation qualities they provide. To make things even more attractive from an energy-saving perspective many of these same windows will have low-emissivity coatings that reflect infrared heat back into the home or office. This minimises heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.
Thermal breaks
Thermal breaks are one of the hottest developments in rooflight technology. A thermal break is a layer of insulation incorporated directly into the rooflight frame which prevents heat from escaping through the frame. The result is a more energy-efficient home or business.
Intelligent glazing
Intelligent glazing is a form of electronic technology that enables a rooflight to adjust the transparency of the window panes in accordance with lighting conditions. Sensors in the rooflight detect changes in light conditions and adjust tint levels of the glass to accommodate them. Intelligent glazing can help you maintain a more stable temperature without having to engage the furnace or air conditioner.
Automated blinds
Much like intelligent glazing, automated blinds are a way to control the amount of direct sunlight entering your home or business. Sensors in the rooflight detect when the amount of sunlight exceeds a certain point and automatically close the blinds to prevent excessive solar gain. This, in turn, enables you to save on air conditioning.
Rainwater harvesting
While it's not yet a standard feature in rooflight design there are some rooflights on the market now that will channel rainfall into collection tanks where it can be used by the home or business owner. Although this by itself is not directly related to energy efficiency, it is nonetheless an important aspect of the drive for greater sustainability in the design of residential and commercial structures.
