Are Rooflights Safe for Kids and Pets?

Rooflights are by nature out of the way and go about their business without ever causing problems for the people who inhabit the space below. However, it is possible - very unlikely, but possible - that a rooflight could cause safety issues for those inhabiting the space below, including kids and pets. Below we'll go through the various considerations in play to ensure your rooflights are always safe for everyone in your home.

If You Want Your Rooflights to be Safe for Kids and Pets do the Following…

Make sure you buy high-quality rooflights

The rooflights we sell at RLRL are meticulously engineered and fashioned from high-quality materials. But that isn't the case with all rooflights. Like everything else, you pretty much get what you pay for with rooflights. Try to remember that when faced with a rock-bottom price.

Restrict access to areas that include rooflights

Rooflights are often installed on flat roofs where children, if they put their mind to it, could gain access. If you have rooflights installed on flat roofs or other areas that kids and pets can reach make sure you restrict access by installing safety barriers.

Install walk-on rooflights where necessary

If you want to install rooflights in an area that children and pets could possibly access make sure they are walk-on rooflights. Walk-on rooflights are designed specifically to bear heavy loads. Therefore, even if your child gets past your barrier and winds up on the rooflight they won't fall through.

Don't install rooflights over children's play areas

There is always a remote chance that during a heavy weather event, something may strike your rooflight and shatter the glass. For that reason, you should make sure you do not install rooflights over children's play areas, or you should move those play areas to another part of the house.

In addition…

In addition to the above precautions, you might want to install safety films on your rooflights. These will ensure that even if the glass breaks it will not crash to the floor below in pieces. You might also consider installing alarms or sensors on or around your safety barrier.
